BRITAIN’S MERCANTILE MARINE.
Rome light is thrown on the employment of foreigners in the British mercantile marine in the report of Great Britain’s Consul at Fiume. In an analysis of the crows of British vessels visiting the port in 1899, ho shows that out of 4781 sailors 1227 were foreigners. Of these, 121 were Germans, 207 Swedes, 207 Italians, 347 Lascars, and 345 of other nationalities. If these figures (remarks the “ Daily News") are at all represontative of the bu k, it is not an altjge:hw comforting thought that practically one-fourth of our mercantile navy is made up foreign mercenaries.
