MINING NEWS.
Kirwan’s Reward reports a return of 1370zs of amalgam from 92 tons. Top plates and chock blocks.
Mr Phipps, Mine Manager at the Britannia, reports that the reef in the winze sunk from No 2 level has widened out to 4ft 6in. All clean quartz, and prospects fairly well.
Several changes have taken place in the masters of dredges on the Buller river. Mr Alf. Smith, lately of the Old Diggings, takes command of the Premier, which commences work in a fortnight, Mr Inwood, of the Rocklands, becomes master of the Welcome, which is to be completed in three weeks, and Mr Black who did the engineering work at the fitting up of the Old Diggings now takes charge of that vessel. The Mine Manager of the Alpine Extended reports No 11 level south has been extended seven feet for [four days with two shifts. The track is seven feet wide intermixed with largo quartz boulders, pug and soft slate. A little gold can be seen in the stone. The stone in the rise above the intermediate No 7 level has cut out and all work on Melvill’s reef has been continued. Driving south on the track in the western cross-cut has been commenced.
The Dunedin Star says that the Levia-than-directors have instructed the dredgemaster to shift along southwards to that little spot where the vendors are alleged to have done so well before they parted to the present company. Why the dredge has not long since had a trial on this “ golden strand ” has not yet been made clear. If the distance is only 300 yards, and a canal exists all the way, while the journey could be accomplished in a few hours it seems inconsiderate of those in charge|that they did not go down there a few days ago, when, if prospects were as reported, they might continue work for a long time.
