(pee press association) House of Representatives. Wellington, This Day. TIMBER EXPORT BILL. The House mot at eleven. Hon Mr Mills moved the second reading of the Timbers Export Bill which provides that the Governor may at any time by order-in council, cause a duty of three shilling! per hundred superficial feet to be levied on timber leaving the colony. Capt. Bussell opposed the Bill on the ground that it was wrong in principle to impose an import duty under any conditions. Mills emphatically declared the Bill was not introduced in any spirit of retaliation. The second reading was carried by 35 to 18, and the House rose at 1 p.m.

Russell asked whether this vote would cover all expenses and w*s the Premier to be the sole representative.

The Council agreed to compromise with the Lower Houso on the Amendments in the Factories Bill. The Timber Export B 11, and Nolson Hirbour Board Anasndinent Bill passed the final stages. In Committee on the Timber Export Bill, tho power to levy higher duty than three shillings p3r hundred superficial feet but not excesding five shillinga was struck out of the schedule and the Bill was then put through the final stages. At 5 10 the House adjourned till 7. 30 as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Hon J. A. Bonar.
