Greymouth Evening Star. AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1901. STATE COAL MINE.

The residents of this district are again getting very anxious regarding the prospects of a State Coal Mine. At the Harbor Board meeting the subject was in evidence. It is not necessary to refer to the present condition of the industry—that being already well known. But that knowledge should spur us on to fresh knowing, as we do, that unless a new development takes place our supply is drawing to an end, There was, and even with some still is, a firm-seated belief that Government will take over and work the Coal Creek Coal Mine, but whereas a State Coal Mine has been opened in the Buller, nothing other than vague and vapoury rumors can be obtained regarding any prospect for this district. The Chairman of the Harbor Board has to-day telegraphed to Mr Guinness asking for further information on the subject, and possibly we may have satisfactory news on the point ere many days are over. But if not then the residents must take decided action in the matter, for if Government is favouring our claims, local pressure will aid the Ministerial effort, whi'e, if indifferent, agitation may induce them to see eye to eye with the people of the locality in this important matter. In any case it is inadvisable to sit down and wait for what may come our way. If we are not to fall out of line, we must, like our neighbours, be energetic, persevering, and persistent.
