Strathnairn got hung in the tapes, dis lodging his rider and falling himself, and took no part in the race. Canteen was the first to show in front from Tortulla and Fulmen, Kalmwai bringing up the rear. Passing the stand Glenalaiale led Canteen, Battleaxe, Palaver, Ideal. At a mile and a quarter Glenaladale was still in the van, but shortly after Palaver joined the leader, Fulmen lying third, and Canteen falling right away. Hounding the turn Glenaladale was beaten, and Tortulla took up the running. Entering the straight, Palaver, Ideal, and Tortulla were in line, just in front of Melwood and Fulmen. At the distance Tortulla headed Palaver, who faded away, and, coming on, she easily stalled off Melwood and Sirius, winning comfortably by two lengths, Melwood beating Sirius by a head. Palaver was fourth, Military fifth, Ideal sixth. Time, 3min 35 2-ssec. Dividends—Tortulla, £9 11s; Melwood, £6 4s.
The Canterbury Races.—Third Day. (pee press association.) Christchurch, November 0. The weather is fine, but there is a strong nor’-wester, making things unpleasant for the public. The attendance is good. Course is hard and dusty. Suburban Hurdles—Huku 1, Hempie 2, Dundee 3. Right Metal and Dartmoor were scratched. Won by a head. Divs, £2 3s and £1 10s. Nursery Handicap —Yladimer 1, King Stock 2, Ascension 3. All started ; close finish. Won by a bare length. Tivs £7 19s fid and 16s. Avon Welter —Westguard 1, Magnificent 2, A ' .'dale 3. Scratched—Will o’Wisp rhd Shrapnel Shell. Won by half a length. Div £2 12s fid and £3 2s fid. Jockey Club Handicap.—Pa'avcr 1, Cannie duel 2. Canteen 3, Scratched — San Kemo. The Auckland Races. Auckland This Day. There is fine weather and a good attendance. The course is in splendid order. Presidents Handicap Blaircarry 1, Highlander 2, Donny-brook 3. Scratched, Pokomoko. Welcome Sfakes —Idas 1, Northumberland 2, Kclburne 3. Scratched— Grey Seaton and Irish. A great race. Wonbyaneck, Divs £1 13s and 15s fid. Hurdles—Regalia II 1, Cavaliero 2, Princess Thule 3. Divs £2 Is fid and 14s.
