THE FACTORIES’ ACT.
The Legislative Council on Saturday night restored the Freezing Works, Dairy Factories, Jam Factories, etc., to the list of exemptions from fortyfive hours being a week’s work, and added a new clause exempting woollen mills. It was because of a refusal to include woollen mills that the Labor Bills Committee of the Council struck them out of the schedule. It is pleasing to note that the Chamber has agreed to the reinstatement of the industries mentioned. But all the same it is most extraordinary that the exemption should be extended to woollen mills—factories that certainly should come under the limited hours of work.
