ITALIAN BARQUE ASHORE.
[pee peess association.]
Dunedin, October 31
The Italian barque Antioco Accame, Captain Monte, was towed to sea from Port Chalmers this morning for Timaru. As only a moderate breeze was blowing she seemed likely to make a fair trip. A telegram was received from James Ross, farmer, Shag Point, stating that a vessel was ashore at Karitigi. Later on a telegram came to hand from the captain; “Send immediately a tug with a powerful pump. The Antioco is aground on Kartigi beach.” No further details are to hand. It is surmised that the bargue must have struck a reef and that the Captain thought it advisable to beach her. The Plucky will leave at daylight for Shag Point. The vessel had been chartered by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Coy, to load at Timaru.
The beach an which the Antioco has gone ashore is sandy and clear of rocks, so that if a gale does not spring up there should be a good chance of getting her off.
_ A wire from the Captain received tonight says that if there is good weather salvage possible.
