A PECULIAR COUPLE.
Dr Symes, the Christchurch health officer, has taken up the case of the couple who have been living in a cave not far from Lyttelton during the past winter. The cave is to be closed up and on his recommendation the Lyttelton Borough Council has agreed to provide a tent and clean straw for the couple. On making inquiries, Dr Symes found that the woman spends 2ls a week on chlorodyne, being 3s per day. The husband earns on an average £2 per week as a lumper, some weeks earning £<l or £5 and other weeks nothing. The local authorities have repeatedly placed the couple in homes, but they would never remain there. On one occasion the wife harangued the Houso of Representatives and was sent to the Wellington Asylum, Mr Joyce being appointed her guardian, but she was discharged in a week as not insane. Private charity has often been shown to them.
