[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.] Heat WaYe and Stormy Weather. Sydney, October 28. There is a sudden heat wave, the thermometer touching 95 in the shade in the city. It was followed to-day by a fierce cold westerly gale. At its height it blew 71 miles an hour. The city was enshrouded in clouds of dust, and the wind swept part of the Colony, in many cases accompanied with heavy rain, hail and snew. There has been considerable damage to crops and property. Wragge's forecast is that this is only the edge of a very dangerous Antarctic disturbance in Sychem, and urgently warns the shipping of a gale with mountainous seas. He forecasts that the weather at New Zealand will be temporarily fine. Thereafter comes Sychem in the south in all its fury. Shipping Dispute. Sydney, October 28. The Court of Eevicw dismissed the Union Coys appeal against the taxation assessment on the wharf and property in Darling Harbor, on the ground that the appeal was that the property having been resumed by the Crown was not liable to taxation. Federal Tariff. A meeting of timber merchants decided to take combined action with the view of having the Federal tarriff on rough timber fixed at Is 6d and dressed timber 3s per 100 super, feet, and doors 2s each. It is stated that representations are being made to Mr Barton to secure the exemption of white pine, and other inodorous timbers.
Tlie Chairman, announed that Mr Seddon had arranged to place an export duty of Is per 100 super feet on white pine and baulk timber. Freetrade Demonstration.
A monster Freetrade demonstration was held at the Town Hall, the Mayor presiding. Mr Eeid and other leaders made speeches, and resolutions were
