SPORTING.

(OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Riccarton Training Notes, Chkistchuech, This Day. The Coast contingent were at Biccarton this morning at daybreak. Will-o'-the-Wisp galloped a mile and a half. He jumped off with Calibre and Peerage, and finished the task in a-most improved manner in 2 43, the others being of no use to him at the finish.; The Wisp

is improving every gallop. The Ashburton racing has done him a deal of good, and every gallop sees a vast improvement. The Coast admirers have nothing to fear. If not successful for the Cup, I would advise them not to get discouraged, for the owners have confidence in the horse securing a race before the curtain is lowered.

Eain is badly wanted. The tracks at Kiccarton are as hard as flint.

Battleaxe, Fulmen and Palaver are greatly fancied here for the Cup.

Battleaxe is in excellent fettle.

[per teess association.]

A good number of spectators who were present on tho course this morning to witness the doings of the cup candidates, and other horses, were rewarded for breaking tho night's rest by some very interesting galloping. The morning was fine but a strong northerly breeze prevented work on plough or sand tracts consequently the grass track was almost entirely used. This was very hard through lack of rain.

Cutt's team of G'enogle, Somcr'ed, Cannia Chiel, Glenaladale, and Windwhistle, were given half to three-quarter pace work. Palaver alone galloped a mile and a half in a pleasing manner, the last round taking 2min 35secs. With a companion Palaver would have considerably improved upon this, for she was moving freely. Her last mile was run in lmin 50scc.

Djin Djin wa3 restricted to along half pace. Fulmen, with the best of the weights had a bout with Huku over a mile and a half of course, and did the full distance in 2 41. The first half mile was done in 53secs, six furlongs in 1 20 and the last half in 53. The Cup horse gave the best exhibition so far and was in the lead all the way. He ran away from Huku but at the finish pulled up. Sirius Ideal, Canteen, Military, did a mile and a half. The former led at first but after a mile Military and Canteen went to the front and rem lined there, while Ideal was beaten off. The first half mile was done in 53, the mile in 151 and the full distance in 2 42£. Military did well, so did Canteen both going comfortable at finish. Ideal had much the worst weights. Will-o'-the-Wisp was too good for Peerage and Calibre in mile and a half, and ran 2 The first mile and a quarter in 2 17. Kahuwai by herself got over a mile and a quarter in good style, the last mile taking 1 50.

Battleaxe was given strong pacing for a mi!e and a half. Melwood ran six furlongs in 1 18. The St. Leger cole is very well, but not estimated highly for the Cup. Blazer beat Jabber comfortably over six furlongs in 1 18 3-5. Pampero went seven furlongs fast, with the St. Clair colt, Brightwill. Bealey ran half a mile in 50;|. Cherrystone was badly beat by Reliance and Paphos, the last half mile of which was run in 54. Okoari was on the course for a short time, but was not worked. Ho appears very lame and is not likely to start at the meeting, certainly not on first day.

After breukfast the course proper was open for two-year olds. Heriosm, Ascension, Rajah, Demurska> Gold Purae, Bombardo, Greek Maid, Lyonesse, St. Epdanccr, Firebrand, Golden Bein, Dick, Tercelet, Aherton, Helen, Faucet Orloff, Kingstork, Imperator, and Lake Shell, Painsctta, Colt took part in sprints of half a milo from barrier starts. Greek Maid. Ascension, Gold Purse and Rajah were prominent of the first ten.

When Cutts worked Dick and Golden Bun were tho best of Yaldhurst's lot.^jggg Orloff Helen, Faucet showed best form many other horses out doing useful exercise. Rain is badly wanted.

[PER PRKSS ASSOCIATION —COPYEIGHT.]
