FOOTBALL.
Wharf Laborers y. Foundry. The return match between the above teams took place on Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon, the proceeds of the gate going to Mr James Earl, who was hurt a few weeks ago while working on the wharf, which resulted in him having to have his leg amputated above the knee. The weather was all that could be desired, and on the teams lining out it was soon seen that the Wharf Laborers ware far heavier than their opponents. The previous match ended in a draw, but this time it looked as if the Wharf Laborers were going to have an easy win, but such was not the case, the loundry winning by eight points (one goal and a try) to six points (two tries). The Foundry kicked off, and the forwards N following up well, they soon had the V harf Laborers in difficulties, and in about five minutes scored first blood for the Foundry near the corner nag. O'Donnell had the kick at goal, the ball going between the two posts. Hie Wharf Laborers now livened up, and shortly afterwards Eastgate scored between the posts for the Wharf Laborers, but G. Goodall failed to add the major points. The game now began to get fast, the ball going from one end of _ the field to the other, and Johnston obtaining possession of the ball crossed the line for the Wharf Laborers. A Goodall bad the kick at goal but the ball went outside the posts. The game now stood Wharf (0), Foundry (6). The Foundry kicked out, and after a few scrimmages they got a forward rush on which enabled Horn to ssore a well earned try, but O Donnell failed to increase the score. Half-time now sounded, Foundry (8), Wharf Laborers (6). In the second spell the Wharf Labourers kicked off, and although they got the ball from the scrummage, the backs failed to make much use of it, mostly mulling. The Foundry backs played well, but never had half the openings given to them as their opponents. Tire forwards of both teams worked hard, but the Foundry who were by far the lighter followed up well, and made the game fast at times. Mr Kettelty had charge of the whistle and gave every satisfaction both to the players and spectators alike. In the evening the Wharf Labourers entertained the Foundry team by giving them a smoke concert at McCarthy s Hotel, where songs, toasts and recitations wore given, and a most enjoyable _ evening w’as brought to a close by the singing of “AuldLang Syne.”
