Concerning the Farmers.
Wellington, This Day. The proposal made at the instance of the Producers’ Union for a conference of representatives of the producing interests has not met with satisfactory response, and has, therefore,, been abandoned.
Wellington Water Supply. Wellington, October 23,
The lirat sod in connection with improvements to the water supply from Wainuiomata was turned to-day by the Mayor. It is intended to do away with the present water-race, from which there is a tremendous leakage, and to substitute a line of pipes. This, it is anticipated, will give a very much increased supply in the city. Anglican Synod.
The Synod passed a motion requesting the President to make arrangements for the better organisation of lay-readers.
A motion was passed, expressing regret at the death of the late Queen.
An opinion was expressed that training in science and the practice of education form an essential part of the preparation of the clergy. The Kanieri Elopement.
Stratford, October 23.
The woman Eodemskiwho eloped from the Kanieri on October 11th with a returned trooper was arrested here today on a charge of abducting two children. Accused was remanded to Hokitika. She arrived here on the 18th. Schools Closed through sickness. Dunedin, This Day.
The prevalence of sickness has had a serious effect on the school average attendance, which in the whole district for the last quarter was 10,832 out of 20,043. The average attendance has not been so low since 1884.
Young Woman Drowned. CnßisTCHuncii, This Day. Annie Rankin, 24 years of age, who has been staying with her brother-in-law at Charter’s Bay was drowned there yesterday afternoon. The Mail Service.
The Government resident agent at ’Frisco has written to the Secretary of the Post Office stating that it is reported that while the Star Company chartered the Atlantic steamers Britainnic and Germanic to the Canadian Pacific Railroad Company . for the Australian lino, the vessels are rated as 17-knot boats, and it is understood that they have no difficulty in maintaining that speed. Industrial Disputes. Dunedin, October 23.
Reference has been filed in the industrial dispute between the Union Steam Ship Company and (he Federated Seamen’s Union. This is the first instance in which employers have sought to benefit by flic Conciliation and Arbitration Act, the Company having submitted proposals which the Union rejected.
The dispute between the Southland Coach Workers’ Union and some employers came before th.e Conciliation Board to-day. The employers of Gore and Otoutru cited were unrepresented, and the Union sought to have them brought under the award. •

The pill was taken to-day as to authorising special loans for the city works, when the drainage loan of £35,000 was rejected by a majority of 141. The tramway loan of £IO,OOO was rejected by a majority of 344; municipal buildings, £6,000, rejected by a majority 345; gas works extension, £4OOO, rejected by 253; ro.ad roller, £IOOO, rejected by 104. The day was wet, and the number that voted was only 69G.
