PAYMENT OF MEMBERS.
The payment of Members Bill brought down by Governor’s message on Thursday proposes to pay members of the Legislative Council £2OO a year (an increase of £50.) and Members of the House of Representatives £3OO a year (an increase of £6O), from Ist January, 1902. The Bill was opposed in its initial stages by Mr. Pirani, who called for a division on the motion that the Governor’s massage transmitting the Bill be referred to tjie
Committee of the Whole. The motion was carried by 33 to 25, and as the sub ject is one that will probably give rise to a good deal of discussion, the division list is of special interest.
The voting was as follows : For the Bill—Arnold, Barclay, Bollard, Carncross, Carroll, Colvin, Duncan, Field, Fisher, Flatman, A. L. D. Fraser. Gilfedder, Hall, Hall-Jones, Hogg, Hornsby, Houston, Kaihau, Laurenson, Lawry, M‘Gowau, R. McKenzie, M Lachlan. M'Nab, Millar, Mills, Napier, Palmer, Parata, Seddon, Steward, Tanner,’Ward. Against the Bill-J. Allen, Atkinson, Sennet, Buddo, Collins, h owlds, W. Fraser, Graham, Hardy, Kerries, J. Hutcheson, Lang, Lcithbridge, Massey, T. Mackenzie-. Meredith, Monk, O Meanv, Piram", Rhodes, G. W. Russell, Captain Russell, R. Thompson. J. W. Thompson, and WiliK Mr Laurenson has given notice that in committee on the Bill he will move that it do not come into operation till Ist.January 1903.
