THE RIVAL MAIL ROUTES.

The “Age” says, regarding the suggestion that New Zea'and should come into the Federal mail contract and reap its advantge by establishing a fast service to Wellington and Bluff for the carriage of mails, it is hardly likely the Federal Government will consent to contribute towards a service which its States have no special interest in. If New Zealand wants an independent mail service, the Vancouver route appears to offer the best prospects, of success. The line would have to be maintained by a modern, high-class standard of steamers. Such a service, the “ Age ” has reason to believe, would command a subsidy from Canada, whilst the Imperial authorities might do something in the same direction and establish an all-British mail line via the Pacific with Australasia.
