AN UNPLEASANT INCIDENT.
By the White Star liner Afric, there arrived at Melbourne last week from South Africa, a squad of New Zealanders including Sergeant-Major Davis, who belongs to Christchurch. He is coming back to the colony with a distinct grievance, and from all accounts has been badly dealt with. It appears that Davis’s men refused duty one morning because they could not get clothes and they were ordered to go to the front, and were only allowed to carry a very light kit. it is stated that Davis was told by a junior “ non. com.” to give up his Gape cart, ho begged leave to retain it, but a young second lieutenant, about 21 years of age, hearing this, came up with a great bluster and stated that if Davis did not give up the cart, he would place him under arrest. Some of Davis’s men got mad at this, and hooted the officer, and were going to pull him off his horse. Davis managed to quieten them, and went under arrest. For six weeeks he was on a kind of prison parole, and then Lord Kitchener withdrew the sentence and Davis was bundled down to Capetown and sent home. He purposes to bring the matter of his treatment under the notice of the New Zealand Government.
