Broome was fined £2 and costs on a charge that on September 28, in the Kaitancata coal mine, an adequate amount of ventilation was not constantly produced in that part of the mine known as McDougall’s Section. This is the first prosecution of s the kind in Otago. The cause was that leakage was due to the door having been improperly opened, and a defective brattice aperture. It was admitted by the prosecution that the defeat was probably due to the action of the parson who had improperly left the door upon. Broome alleged that the leaving of the door open was rna'iciously done in view of the Inspector’s visit. Tho air was right in the morning, and when tho door was closed after the Inspector’s visit the air was right again in the afternoon.
