Shipping Matters. Wellington, Oct. 17. The nuisance caused by the whistling of at*anoers at wharves and moorings is to cess«in Wellington Harbor. It was decide by tho Harbor Boaad to-day to draw up u byedaw to effect thfe reform. The Marine Department is to be requested by tho Harbor Board to communicate with tho Admiralty and ask them to send a surveying vessel to Wellington to verify the harbor charts, which were compiled many years ago. Cruelty to Animals. The Justices who hoard the charge of revolting cruelty to a cow reported yesterday, paid a visit to the scene of the alleged outrage, and they also examined tho injured beast. As the result they found themselves- unable to see eye to eyo in regard to the case, end announced this morning that they had decided that the case should be adjourned till Monday next, and be re-heard by the Stipendiary Magistrate. Ventilation of Coal Mines.
Dunedin,. .This Day. At Kaitangata to day, “'George H. Broome was fined £2 and costs on a charge that on September 28, in the Kaitancata coal mine, an adequate amount of ventilation was not constantly produced in that part of the mine known as McDougall’s Section. This is the first prosecution of s the kind in Otago. The cause was that leakage was due to the door having been improperly opened, and a defective brattice aperture. It was admitted by the prosecution that the defeat was probably due to the action of the parson who had improperly left the door upon. Broome alleged that the leaving of the door open was rna'iciously done in view of the Inspector’s visit. Tho air was right in the morning, and when tho door was closed after the Inspector’s visit the air was right again in the afternoon.
