OUR KUMARA LETTER.

(OUE OWN COEBSSPOJiDENT).

A half cast Chinese boy, named Charlie Hum, fell down an abandoned tailrace at Callaghans on Sunday afternoon, and sustained such serious injuries that he died at the local hospital yesterday morning. He bad been unconscious from the time of meeting with the accident and his .recovery regarded as hopeless.

A movement is about to be set on foot locally having for its object the raising of the necessary capital to complete the Grenstone Gold dredge. It is suggested thai the present Company should liquidate and hand over the assets to a new '

Company with a reduced capital, a portion of which will be divided pro rata in paid up shares among present shareholders. As the Dnnedia management of this Company has been, to put it mildly, extremely unsatisfactory, it is proposed that the cilice be shifted to the Coast as it is felt that local directors being on the ground can exercise bettor supervision. This is experience for which we have had to pay dearly. Last night at the To wn Hall a large crowd assembled to witness the “ Mock Parliament ” he'd by the members of the Kumara Debating Society. It was one of the most eutertain.ng evenings held by the Club, and was a fitting close to a very successful session. The matter under consideration was a “Compulsory Marriage Bill,” introduced by the Premier and supported by a strong Government, comprising among its members two ladies viz. Miss Poster, as Minister of Defence, and Miss Moore as Minister of Justice. The Opposition lead by the Rev. Mr Thompson, found an able lieutenant in Mr. •Stokes, who created immense merriment by his sarcasim. As predicted a “ Left Wing,” which by the way was on the right side, sprung into existence during the evening, and by their eratic tactics succeeded by stonewalling the bill until nearly eleven o’clock. By this stage the end of the committee stage had been reached and it was decided to adjourn. During the evening Rev, J. B. Clark acted as Speaker and performed his duties efficiently. Rev. B. Whitehouse as Chairman of Committees had a difficult task to perform. He, however, is possessed of a full knowledge of such duties as appertain to Parliamentary procedure, and this carried him successfully through. The final ambulance lecture to be given by Dr. Scott is fixed for Thursday night. Owing to a misunderstanding that it was for men only, a number of members absented themselves on the previously announced night, hence it was postponed. The Dr. wishes it to be understood that the lecture is open to all, irrespective of sex.
