GOLD MINING NOTES.

The return from the Kirwan’s Reward is 65ozs of amalgam from 104 tons of stone from the top plates only. Owing to the non-arrival of machinery, work, since the completion of the pontoons and superstructure on tho Fairdown drfcdge, has been suspended. During September the Woodstock Gold Mining Company, Auckland, treated

I.GSB tons of bullion valued at £2,023 the Mananu Gold Mining Company treated 348 tons for £1,204, and tbe Crown Mines 3,734 tons for £5,942. At a meeting of shareholders of the Waimea Creek and Flat Company held at Christchurch on Tuesday last, it was decided to go into voluntary liquidation. Our Dunedin correspondent telegraphed last night that an extraordinary meeting of the Leviathan Company a motion was carried by 19 votes to that the capital of tbe company bo increased by the creation of twelve thousand new shares of 5s each, to be called preference shares, to which special rights and privileges are attached. Special votes of thanks were accorded to the dredgemaster and the crew.

The Island Creek dredge washed up on Saturday, but the return so far is not to hand. The dredge is not yet on the lead, but is working round towards it. Operations were suspended for one day for repairs. As about 8 ozs per week will cover the cost of working the dredge, the returns in a months’ time should meet the cost and give something to spare. The Warcatea dredge lost a couple of days last week on account of the bow-line wheel splitting. A patch was put on and work continued on Saturday, another wheel in the meantime being telegraphed for. Some of the main driving gear is hardly strong enough for the tight wash on which the dredge is operating. As work continues and the weak parts are revealed, the necessary alterations will be made. The ladder is at present down only 13ft, and has not yet touched the expected lead, which is supposed to lie about oft beneath the heavy ground now being worked. No wash up will take place before the end of the week.
