New Zealand’s quota to the South
African War. Wellington This Day. According to a return presented to the House last evening on the motion of Mr M’Nab, 118 members of the various contingents from this colony were killed in battle or died from disease in South Africa. Of this number the first contingent lost 16, the second 22, the third 25, the fourth 17, the fifth 25, the sixth 4, and the seyenth 9,
New Rates. The cry is still they come! Several notices of measures were given notice of this evening including the rebate of Crown Tenants Bents'Amendment Bill, Medical Practitioners, Unclaimed Money, and Public Trust Office Bills. Pension. Mr Eobert Kaye formerly of the Postal and Telegraph Department has been granted a pension of £215 13s 4d by way of retiring allowance as from December Ist last. Auckland Members Caucus. The caucus of Auckland members re the ’Frisco mail subsidy lapsed. Divided counsels was the cause. Forest Gate Estate. The Premier informed Captain Bussell that the owners of Forest Gate (Ilawkes Bay) Estate had been given the option of retaining that property, or handing it over to the Government at the figure fixed by the Compensation Court.
