ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES.

(pee peess association.)

Dunedin, Oct. 13.

A shooting affair occurred last night between Cumberland and Castle streets. Two women named Mary Pearce and Ronnick quarrelled over something. Pearce went to the house with a revolver and shot Bennick in the lower part of the face. Bennick was removed to the hospital. It isbelieved that the wound is not likely to prove fatal. The woman Pearce has been arrested. Both parties are said to be respectable people. Pearce is not long from the Auckland district. Napiee, Oct 12. An accident of a rather serious nature occurred just prior to the wood chopping contest at the Agricultural and Pastoral Society !s show to-day. One of the entrants, a man named Warwick West, was trimming a tree preparatory to taking part in the competition when his axe slipped and cut his instep very seriously necessitating his removal to the hospital. He is likely to be incapacitated for some time, even should he ever regain the use of his foot, which was nearly severed from the lag. A collect on was taken on his behalf and a considerable amount subscribed on the ground. Fortunately the society had taken the precaution to take over an accident insurance policy for the two clays, so that West will benefit by the forethought of the society’s executive.
