AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH
The No Confidence Vote.
Control of New Guinea.
[per press association—copyright.]
Ecceivcd this day at 10 12 a m. Sydney, This Day,
As the Treasurer predicted the return of £2,000,300 from the Commonwealth, and as the amount under the Federal budget falls short by a quarter of a million, the Opposition based their want of Confidence on Government, adhering to their estimate as against the Federal Treasurer who objected to the colony being saddled with certain deficits. The Commonwealth assumes control of New Guinea as the Imperial Government refused to contribute £7OOO yearly to the cost of administration. This amount will be guaranteed by the States. Received this day at 1 34 p.m. ’ Sydney, This Day. A duty, equal to a shilling a bunch, has been placed on bananas. This presents a serious outlook for Fiji planters, who only have New Zealand to look to for a market.
The Assembly is still sitting, discussing the censure vote.
