THE CHINESE REBELLION.
■ [per PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT,] Beoeived this day, at 9 20 a m. Hong Kong, Oct. 8. The legation quarter in Pekin is strongly fortified, the British fortification being especially formidable. The legation guards are being confined to barracks owing to Chinese complaints of their roaming about Pekin intoxicated, maltreating and robbing the residents. Shang has appointed a commissioner to negotiate commercial treaties and revise tariff.
Eeuter’s correspondent at Pekin reports that arrangements have been made in the Chinese treasury for thirteen million taels for providing for the return of the Imperial Court to Pekin, and for furnishing the palaces at Eaifunghu, the capital and Paotingfu,' and for entertaining on an extravagant scale.
