SAWMILL EMPLOYEES UNION.

A well attended meeting of Sawmill Employees and persons engaged in the timber trade took place at McCarthy’s Commercial Hotel, Greymouth, on Saturday afternoon last, for the purpose of considering the advisability ui forming an Industrial Union. About 50 persons were present, representing all the mills with the exception of two or three on the Hokitika line. Several members of tha Executive Committee of the Wharf Labourers Onion were present by invitation, a-.cl Mr At. F. 8011, President, was elected to fill • the chair. After the chairman had detailed the object of the meeting, it was unanimously resolved that a Union, to be called “The West Coast Sawmill Employees and Timber Trades Industrial Union of Workers” bo formed, and registered under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act.

A committee of eleven persons including officers was then formed with power to add to that number at next meeting so that every mill should be represented. The following are the names of the committee which was ele.cted pro tem : F. Meyer (President) F. Allen and A, Davis (vice presidents), E, Tolhusst (treasurer), G, Gillanders (secretary), A Lorrimer, A Anderson, J. Fitzsimmons, F. J. Schofield J, Bergin, P Kelly.

It was then decided that the initiation foe fte fixed at 5/- and the contributions be 3d per week. The .next meeting takas place on Saturday afternoon Oct 19tb, when the rules will be .submitted previous to application being mt’-do for registration of the Union. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Bell for having so ably filled the chair, and also to the Wharf Laborers Union for having so kindly lent their assistance, terminated the meeting.
