“A RAILWAY IN THE SKY.”
What has been termed a railway in the sky is in course of construction in Southern California. Immensely strong steel cables are being swung from peak to peak of four different mountains, and on these cables electric cars, each to hold some 20 passengers, will be swung. The first half of the journey between each mountain summit will bo run by force of gravity, a process which should try the nerves of the more timid passengers, for it will seem very much like falling through space towards the bottom of the mountain gorge nearly half a mile beneath. On arriving at the lowest point the electric current will bo turned on, and the car propelled up the cablojto the next mountain summit, where it will bo run on an ordinary railway track until it is time for the nexo plunge into space. In one case the aerial flight will extend over more than a mile, and in the course of their journey the; passengers will have the truly novel experience of passing alternately through winter snd summer scenery, for the mountain tops arc perpetually snow-covered, and yield only the vegetation of cold climates, while the valleys are constantly decked with the rich foliage and flowers of semi-tropical regions.
