NO BARMAIDS IN INDIA
The President of the Women’s ChrisTemperanco Union, tays tho Times of India, has received the following letter from Mr Kisch, Officiating Secretary to the Government of Bengal, dated 3rd August: —“l am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your memorial, dated February 26ih, representing the evils connected with the employment of barmaids in bars and hotels in Calcutta In reply, lam to say that tho Lieutenant Governor has made inquiries in the matter, and that ho concurs in the opinion expressed in your memorial and other representations which have been made to him that tho employment of barmaids in hotels and drinking saloons in Calcutta is injurious to the women thomaedvoo, and also tho cause of discredit to the European community. His Honor has, therefore, decided that tho practice to which exception is taken shall be discontinued, aud orders have been issued to make it a condition in all future licenses for bars and other drinking places that no woman shall be employed in connection with them in any capacity.
