In connection with the Chinese Bankruptcy Case, evidence was given that it was a common practice among Celestials to interchange naturalisation paper in order to avoid the poll tax, travelling between the states. Papers were also forwarded to China enabling the nonnaturalised Chinese to enter Australia. Wickham Colliery Subsidence. Extensive subsidence has taken place over Wickham Colliery workings, Carrington. The Council Chambots and five "houses are considerably damaged, and the residents vacated the premises. Water and gas mains were fractured and the street flooded. The town was left in darkness.
