Greymouth Evening Star. AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1901. FIJIAN LABOR LAWS.
Mr, Millar the senior member for Dunedin is pretty keen upon labor matters; as indeed ho ought to bo for it was upon this Labor PJank that he first appeared before the public; got into Parliament; and hascontinued to remain there over since; acting squarely and consistently to his party. On many occasions he has brought Labor’s cause prominently before the House, and been, instrumental in securing concessions. Of late, possibly deeming a section of the party inclined to tyranise, he has not taken as prominent a part as formerly. In the House yesterday, however, he “came with a rush.” He gave notice of a labor question that indicates he has a greater opinion of the “ Power of the New Zealand Parliament,” than most folks were aware of. He is to ask the Premier, “ if he has heard the report that the Colonial Sugar Coy., are importing Parseo fitters and turners, blacksmiths and carpenters to take the place of Britishers in their sugar raids at Fiji. If the report is true Mr Millar wants to know what steps will be taken by the Government to prevent a continuance of this undesirable practice?” We should also like to know what steps our giant Premier intends taking. Will ho forthwith arm the Tutanekai and Hinemoa, and taking a detachment of returned South African troopers, place them in control of Levuka, and thereupon declare Fiji annexed to New Zealand, and assimilate Fijian laws to our own ? If he does this, and Britain does not interfere, we have no doubt he can settle the sugar-labor matter in Fiji to the satisfaction of Mr. Millar. But, if not, we are afraid any attempt by New Zealand to interfere with the internal arrangements of Fiji will be met with | a severe snubbing
