The Chairman reported that since last meeting ho had seen Mr M’Kay, the Government geologist, and that lie had admitted that the spot selected by the bore hole must have been the place greed to by himself and the members. 3 held that the bore hole would probably have to go 200 feet further before coal was struck. “The railway lino, Cobden side, is being raised and protected with thirdclass stone. “ The derrick crane was tried bn Monday, The iron sheave at the jib end proved rather small for the new chain and part of the rim burst off. A new sheave is being made. It will be necessary to have a keeper put on to prevent the chain from flying out of the sheave when a sling slips. “During September 2478 tons of material were taken from the quarry. Of this 726 tons were spoil and 1,752 tons stone. “A plan following and casing the S;rade at the approach to Cobden bridge las been made. It will • alter the grade from 1 in 11 to nearly 1 in 15. The Borough engineer examined the bridge and plan and has no objection to the change being made. “On south breakwater a good path bf coke ballast has been made. “The signalman’s cottage has been repaired and corrugated iron put on the north gable. “ A new 1-} inch chain has been got for the crane. “Regarding the railway line between the Office and Lagoon bridge, it would be the better of being lifted and ballasted, commencing near the crossing at the smith's shop, and raising it at the lowest place about six inches. It would be a convenient time to do it either after the stone lately brought down in the quarry is exhausted, or when we commence work at the North breakwater, as to do it just now would stop delivery of stone. The cost will bo about £55. “ Diamond drill.—-Prices have been obtained from the American Diamond Rock Boring Company and the Diamond Drill and Machine Company, both of New York, A third offer from the Bullock Manufacturing Company should be in first mail.” On the motion of Mr Campbell it was resolved that the work on Cobden bridge be carried out in accordance with the plans of the engineers.
