London, September 30. Bruce Hamilton reports that 1,500 commanded by Louis Botha and Grobcliar attacked Forts Itala and Prospect. Nineteen of ihc enemy were killed, including two commandants, with numerous wounded. The Boers retired towards the north-east.
Lord Milner has'directed the disposal of the property of the burghers still in the field so as to maintain their families. The Boers attacked the Basutos on the 21th and severe fighting ensued. Three' Boers were killed and the Basutos retired.
Lord Kitchener, in replying to Slialkburger’s letter expressing his desire for peace, explained,that Great Britain cannot abandon the annexation of the ox-E-cpublics without breaking faith with the loyalists, and added that in regarding the Cape rebels as traitors the prerogative of clemency must bo exercised by the unfettered discretion of the Government.
The farms near all the principal Transvaal garrisons are managed by two Australian and Cambridgeshire farmers, who supply sufficient green fodder and vegetables for the local forces.
