FOOTBALL

Wharf Laborers y. Foundry.

The above match took place on Victoria Park on Saturday, and resulted in a draw, each scoring three points. In the first spsll the Foundry obtained a penalty kick wbich M’Phersoa converted. In the second spell Martin scored a try for the Wharf labourers, which Goodall failed to convert. Although the Foundry obtained possession of the ball in the scrums of the first spell they failed to make much use of it, but in the second spell the wharf labourers heeled the fall out more than their opponents, and although they got on some good passing rushes, they failed to score. The Foundry won the toss and the Wharf laborers kicked off against a light breeze and soon the former had the wharf in trouble, but failed to cross the lino. Towards the last of the spell the Foundry obtained a free kick through infringements of the rules by one wharf hand, which they connvorted. In the second spell the wind had almost died away, but the wharf laborers who wore by far the heavier team and had down hill play soon had their opponents in trouble, and although they got possession of the ball as often as the foundry in the scrums they failed to cross t e lino more than once. For the Foundry in n the forwards Sexton, Lahore and M’Carthy played well, while Carroll who is a new hand at llugby football is the makings of a good player with practice. In the back division Mooney was the pick Retting his passes away well. For the Wha f laborers the forwards*all played well but with a little practice would make fur forwards. In the back division Johnson, Beale, Crawford and Eastgate seemed to be the pick. The full-backs for both teams played well getting their kicks in every time. Mr Conway officiated as referee and his decisions were well received by both spectators and players alike.
