NEWBURY-SPADA CONCERT.

To the musical part of the inhabitants a real treat was given in the Opera House last night, when the above talented vocalists gave their opening concert. The attendance was large and appreciative; although there was—-as unfortunately there is too often at all such entertainments —some of the larrikin element, who neither understanding nor oaring for good music, did their utmost to prevent others enjoying it. An interuption was caused last night by this element, which called forth ’some very strong language from Mr Newbury. Madam Spada was in rare voice last night and in “Angels over bright and fair," “Eillarney’ 1 and “Eobin Adair” charmed her audience with her finished rendering of these fine numbers. Mr Newbury was of course, the feature of the concert, and in “ Como into the Garden Maud ” was really brilliant and electrifying. “ The Holy City ’’ was exquisitely rendered, and from the fact it being well known would possibly be voted Mr Newbury’s best effort, but from a purely critical point the first selection would be awarded first place. He received immense applause for both numbers, as indeed he did for “Annie Laurie,” and “The Message.” In the selections from “ Paust” and “II Tronatore,’’ Mr Newbury and Madame Spada were very successful. Mr Archibald Scott—who is taking the place of Mr Hahn, gave “ Bid me to Love ” andseveral. other selections. He has a good serviceable baritone voice, but did not we think do himself justice last night. Miss Jenny West, the talented pianist, amply demonstrated that in capable hands a piano is something more than an instrument to accompany vocalists or to form part of an orchestra. She undoubtedly is a, fine performer.

To-night the company appear in an entire change of programme, and we feel certain that it will be in every way as popular as that given last evening, if not more so.

For the benefit of country folks ihe trains' running on the Brunner line hWie ' been delayed until after the ontertaiment. On Sunday a grand sacred concert will be given commencing at a quarter past eight o'clock.
