The Estimates. Wellington, September 27. So far only one class o£ the Colonial Secretary’s Department of the Estimates has been disposed of, but it bristled with items of a debatable character. Other debatable classes over which fighting is threatened, arc the Defence and Postal which will open up tbo question ot the renewal of the ’Frisco mail contract, and, Education in connection with a discussion looms large over equal pay for male and temalo teachers. Jottings. The Petitions Committee of the House of Representatives reporting on several petitions has recommended that the 0. D. Act be repealed. A Wellington petition, praying for the prohibition of the publication of the winners of sweep stakes by newspapers and the prevention of “Tote” and street betting, has been referred by the Petitions Committee of the House to the Government for consideration.
