Mr Petrie said it would be well to ascertain where the ground was, in order to see whether it was judicious to let the section, for the Council through ignorance had let ground near the hospital that should not have been leased. Mr Sheedy said that there was no doubt that a mistake had been made in letting the site referred to. Mr Thomas thought the Council should make itself better acquainted with the position in future. The Mayor was also in the dark as to the site and the Council was to blame, an opinion all councillors agreed with. From Australian Widow’s Fund stating that the Society was not letting out money in New Zealand. A plumbers license was ordered t? be granted to Thomas Owens on payment of fee and finding necessary security. Resolved on motion of Mr Thomas that recount for tar to Grey Harbor Board be withdrawn. " (2) That the question of asphalting Alexander and Murray streets be deferred until the drains in the vicinity are finished. “ (3) With regard to the application of petitioners in Turumaha street to build a wall across a right-of-way—Your committee cannot make a recommendation, as it is reserved on the native leases as a right-of-way. “ (4) Mr. Stewart’s approach—Wc recommend that the railway be made as far as the section boundary, but the applicant must find his own. pipes, the dtain being on his own land. “ (5) We find that Thompson street has asphalt footpaths on both sides, but the one on the north side is rather narrow. There are more important s'roots with out asphalt at all. We recommend to at the gutters be cleaned up, and a man put on to break the metal.” Mr Petrie objected to the eastern sid of Alexander street being shunted in the manner it was proposed, especially as there was a petition from the residentin the locality regarding same, and inti mated he would give notice of motion for next meeting. Mr Thomas said that he did not wan? a large expenditure in Thompson Street, but thought a few pounds spent would set the street passable and satisfy the ratepayers in that street. I suggest in order to save delay, that I should go to Christchurch on the Ist October and consult with Mr Bell, returning to Greymouth on the 9th. By adopting this course tenders can be called almost at once, and the tenders will bo a’l in by the time Mr Bell arrives here.’’ Mr Bigoeli was quite willing to the proposal provided. Mr Lord was perfectly sure as to the reservoir, which was the most important matter, but .preferj rod lo have it personally reported upon by an engineer.
