THE FEDERAL PARLIAMENT

[per press association- —COPYRIGHT,

Melbourne, September 25. Mr Barton announced that the Treasurer would deliver the budget on Bth October, and that the tariff would* be submitted the same evening. The Immigration restriction Bill is in Committee. A Government amendment was moved with the view of preventing any embarrassment being thrown on the Imperial Government by specifying the restricted races, leaving it to tho Government by resolution to determine the races from time to time. This was mere tho outcome of Japan’s influence on Britain in regard to Canadian legislation.

The debate so far is strongly nationalistic. The tone of the speakers demand the insertion of Japanese even at the risk of the bill being vetoed.
