(per press association.) Accidental Drowning. Dunedin, September 28. At the inquest on William M'Donald, who was drowned in the harbor, the evidence tended to show that while attending the mooring of the buoy he gave a turn of the chain round his leg and a lurch of the yacht probably caused him to slip overboard.

A verdict of accidental drowning was returned, the jury drawing the attention of the authorities to the necessity for pioviding proper appliances for saving life, also sympathising with the relatives and friends of deceased. Big Fire at Invercargill. Invercargill, This Day.

At 1 a m a fire broke out in E. E. Kidd’s store in Main street, Win ton. It destroyed the business block containing Kidd’s and M’Williams’ stores ; Perry’s hotel and stables; Kennedy, tobacconist; Lyon, fancy goods ; Natal Mortgage Coys Store and office; Moore’s and Hall, butcher shop and bakery; Cole, Saddler ; Cameron, photographer, and Permon a fishmonger. The loss exceeds £IO,OOO. The insurances amount to £3,940. Fire at Napier.

Napier, This Day. The upstairs portion of the Albion Hotel was completely gutted by fire early this morning. All the boarders escaped unhurt, though they lost all their effects. The building was owned by Robjohn’s estate and was insured in the Standard for £I2OO. Ikon, the licensee is covered by a poliej of £750 on furniture and stock in the Norwich Union.
