There are now 800 names on the Hawkes Bay A. and P. Association roll of membership.
Several tons of willows for basket and chair-making have been cut this season, and patches of osier willows are now to be seen cultivated on some of the waste lands near the Canterbury rivers.
During the past twelve months 91,566 acres of Crown lands were disposed of in the Hawkes Bay district. Of that area 13,301 acres were sold for cash.
The Hawkes Bay County Council is agitating to be allowed to spend income from certain reserve on other reserves in its district.
The Timaru Railway Library, which belongs to the employees on the South Canterbury section of the railway service, now contains 350 volumes.
The latest issue of the Russian offical periodical dealing with public hygiene gives a gloomy account of the failure of the measures adopted during late years to choc]: the spread of leprosy in that country. The loathsome disease is now increasing in no fewer than 49 Russian Governments and districts. The greatest number Of lepers in any single government is found in Lithuania, where there are 609 cases under medical isolation. There are 201 in Courland, 124 in Astrachan, and 121 in the Kuban district. Thu trial of the English, American, and New Zealand-manufactured railway locomotives with the object of ascertaining their respective coal consumption is to be made between Oamaru and Palmerston South instead of between Christchurch and Culverden, as originally intended, the bridges on the latter section not being considered suitable for the purpose. The engines will start from Oamaru and run to Palmerston South and back, a total distance of 74 miles. It has been decided to form a Cooperative Poultry Company for Patea and surrounding districts. The people interested are taking the matter up heartily.
According to the Oamaru “Times,” the scarcity of feed has necessitated heroic measures for the sustenance of young lambs. In some places condensed milk in considerable quantities has been used.
