OUR KUMARA LETTER.
(OUB OWN COIBIBPONDXNT.)
The committee of the Debating Club met during the week and arranged to conclude tne ordinary business of the session on Tuesday, October 18th, with a “Mock Parliament," The bill to be introduced deals with compulsory marriage and will be drafted in the meantime. Every effort will be put forth to make this the crowning success of the session. The question of holding a social will be considered later.
Thefollovringprogramme wasdrafted by the Touhg Men’s Club at their meeting on Tuesday night ;—September 24th, Lecture by Mr. Brame on “Ferns**; October Bth, Mr. Mollraith lectures on Pope’s works; October 22nd, Mr. Whitehouse lectures on Spencer’s “First Principles ”; November 7th, Mr. Thompson on Browning's works. Thus the members have a really good programme to look forward to. . i( The advent of the cricket season is to be heralded by the Westbrook Cricket Club. The members intend shortly to hold a ball' in furthering the interests thereof. It seems strange that all efforts to carry on a club in Samara have been met with failure, whereas in ,a country Slace such as above mentioned, the game ourishes. Surely there is a screw loose somewhere.
As anticipated the Hokitika Dramatic dub were greeted by a large and enthusiastic audience in their appearance in the Theatre Boyal on Wednesday night. This result was primarily due to the excellent reputation won by the members .on former' occasions when we were
favoured with a display of their histronic ability. In “ Time and the Hour ” the various members of the troop found ample scope fpjc the display of talent, and the public were not disappointed. On enquiring this morning for the reason or the presence of so many children at large,, seeing it is an ordinary school-day''and particularly remarking their demonstrativeness, I was informed that the teachers had gone to Hokitika to attend the lectures on the training of : hud and eye given by Mr Isaac.) .
