FOOTBALL.
Red Rosea y. Westport Rivals.
The football match between the Westport Rivals and the Red Roses took place on Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, And resulted in a win for the Roses by three points to nil, E. Chapman scoring a try. The ground was in a very sloppy condition, and ' a strong wind made natters worse. The game from a spectators point of view was very uninteresting, , being a forward one from start to finish. Mr. Flynn had charge of the whistle, and gave every satisfaction. Banquet in the Evening. The banquet tendered to the Westport footballers by the Red Rose Football Club at the Wharf Hotel last evening was a great success; members being present from all the local Clubs, and also most of the members of the West Coast Rugby Union. Mr. P. Skoglundoccupied the chair, and over eighty sat down to an excellent table. Mr. J. M. Hamilton, President of the Star Football Club, wrote apologising for his absence, and also for some remarks he had made at , the Star social on Monday night, which some of the members of the Roses had taken exception to. After the toast of the King had been duly honored, the Chairman proposed “ The Visitors, 1 ’ and' in doing so referred to their excellent behaviour since arrival both on and off the field. Messrs Hughes, Roche and MTlwee, in responding, thanked the Roses and the Grey footballers for the way in which they had treated them. During the evening the following other toasts and songs were given Song, Mr. Williams; “Kindred Sports,” responded to by Messrs. Campbell and Lahore ; recitation, Mr. Craig; song, Mr. Skoglund; “ Rugby Union," responded to * by Messrs. M‘Kay, Hughes and Skog- ■ lund ; song, Mr. Hughes; “ Kindred Clubs,” responded to by Messrs. M'Plicrson, Walton and Conway; song, Messrs. Roche and West; “The Ladies,” responded to by Messrs. Oxenhara and Scott; song, Messrs. Skoglund and Chunn; “The Red Rose Club,” responded to by Messrs. West and Craig; song, Messrs. Lucas and Smith; “The •Press,” responded to by Messrs. W, Corby (Argus) and F. White (Stab) ; song, Messrs. Chapman and Seawright ; recitation, Mr. Craig. Messrs. G. Perotti and Priest supplied excellent music, and the singing of “ AuldLang Syne ” and “ God Save the King ” brought a very enjoyable evening to a close.
