SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

Towns having defeated Gaudaur the championship again comes to Australia which has 23 wins to its credit against 6 to America. The number of contests won by individual scullers is as follows :

The last race for the championship prior to the present contest was in 1896, when Gaudaur easily defeated James Stanbury, of New South Wales, over the Thames course. Stanbury had earlier in the year wrested the tillc from “Wag Harding, an English sculler, and remained in England to meet the Canadian.

Towns is a native of New South Wales and lias for some years been looked upon as a probable holder of the championship. He was successful in his various races in his native colony before lie left for London in 1899. In that year he won the sculling Championship of England, and in 1900 he successfully defended it against James Wray, another Australian. It will be recollected that Towns was recently associated with Mr. Spencer Gollan and Tom Sullivan in breaking tlio rowing record for the course between Oxford and Putney. Towns is a comparatively young man, being some twelve or fifteen years younger than ids opponent, who is about 40 years of age.

In tliis race for the Championship of the World, Towns rowed in a new “ short ” Clasper boat, 25ft long, llin in in beam. The course rowed over was u*)t a straight one, but included two or throe bends, which favoured the Canadian. The Australian conceded a stone weight to Gaudaur, who was recently de- f scribed by a well-known acquatic writer as being " in the sere and yellow leaf now so far as athletic vigor is concerned.’
