NEW UNION COMPANY STEAMER.

The order for a superior vessel to trade between Australian poets and Calcutta has (says the Sydney Morning Herald) been given by the TJ.S.S. Company to Messrs Denny Bros, of Dumbarton. Her dimensions are fixed at 430 ft length, 54tt beam, and depth of hold. She will have a dead weight capacity of 8500 tons, with a cubic measurement capacity (exclusive of special bunkers) of 460,000 feet, or over 11,000 tons. She will be fitted with tanks for 2000 tons water ballast, and will have a mean draught of 25tt. Her engines will be of the very latest type, and it is estimated that, fully loaded, she will be able to steam 11 knots at sea. In accordance with the custom now being adopted in regard to large steamers, she will be fitted with twin screws, while a full complement of 12 powerful s*team winches will ensure speedy loading and discharging of cargo. In every other respect the vessel will be supplied with modern gear and fittings, a special feature being a shelter teak deck, running right fore and aft, and capable of accomodating 500 horses. It is claimed that when finished she will be second to no cargo steamer in the world.
