COLORED ILLUSTRATIONS.

Not the least valuable of the features of the “ Library of Famous Literature" is its series of some five hundred full page illustrations and coloured plates. These illustrations are printed separately from the text, on heavy enamelled paper, and comprise a rich collection of pictures and portraits of literary interest. They include places and people famed in fable and story, portraits of authors in their studies, and here and there famous illustrations of imaginary works. There are reproductions of celebrated pieces of statuary, like the Laocoom, and other notable pieces of Greek and Roman art. There are reproductions of famous paintings of events of historical or literary interest ; and likewise many of the illustrations are from rare old prints, found chiefly in books whose value is indicated by the fact that they are kept in glass classes in museums. The series of portraits of authors alone represents a striking collection. There are mere than two hundred of the foremost figures in literary history pictured here, many of the portraits (of authors now, living) having been taken especially for the “ Library.” Another novel feature is the series of authors’ homes, more than fifty in number, showing the birthplace of celebrated men of letters, or the homes where their masterpieces were written. These include the homes of Dante, Chaucer, Spenser, Sir Philip Sydney, Milton, Drydon, Goldsmith, Voltafre, Goethe, and Emerson, not to speak of a crowd of others nearer to our day.

On Tuesday, September 17th, the lists for Now Zealand will be finally closed and the remarkable offer of “ The Library of Famous Literature ” will have come to an end. Although the sale has been successful beyond expectation the arrangement with the London Publishers does not permit of a renewal of the offer as no further copies are available for New Zealand. The present opportunity should be seised at once.
