The House has been engaged during the whole of to-day in discussing a breach of its privileges. Some time ago the Dunedin “gtar” published the evidence by some of the witnesses before the Gold-

fields Committee on a petition by Mr H. Easton, alleging serious irregularities in regard to the flotation of dredging companies in Otago and on the West Coast, and the House declared the publication a breach of privilege. A committee was sot up to find out if possible, how the newspaper obtained the evidence, but could not do so, and. reported on Friday last that Mr Cohen, the ‘Star’s’ correspondent had refused to give the name of the person who gave him the evidence. All day to-day the' House has been considering what it should do with the Star’s representative, but the task proved very difficult.

The Premier moved that no further action be taken, but Mr Fisher, who led a vigorous opposition to such course, moved that Mr Cohen he fined £SO for his refusal to disclose the name of his informant. This was negatived by 42 to 18.

The debate was continued until 10 80 p. m., when the House adjourned without having come to any decision on the subject,
