SUPREME COURT SITTINGS.
(pee pbess association.)
Invkhcakgilii, Sept 9. At the Supreme Court to-day the jury found a verdict of guilty on both counts against D. Matheson, ex-engineer of the s. s. Ooeana. He was charged with firing a revolver at John Spencer at the Bluff with intent, and with assaulting the same man.
The jury were of opinion that the shooting was done under the influence of strong excitement. His Honor said it was a pity that a man with a good character and in a position he had held, should be in such a situation. His act, however, was one that could not go lightly punished, and the sentence was five months imprisonment.
At the conclusion of the calendar Judge Denniston again referred to the police methods of questioning persons suspected of offences. Judge Williams remarks on a similar point in the Weidner case at Dunedin were quoted, and His Honor said he would confer with his learned brother on the subject on which he had always understood they were agreed.
