The following passengers arrived by the Wainui this afternoon. —Misses Bock, and Eobinsou ; Mesdames Mahoney and child, Welch and infant, Williams, Eobinson, Stubbington and 3 children; Messrs Hurst, Wade, Hefferman, Schroeder, Stubbs, O’Connor, Paterson, M’Haig, Cunningham, M’Millan, Coote, Cooper, Stubbington, Butterfield Colman, Wallace, Adjt. Ward S.A., M’Grath, Webber, Eoss, Eenton, Hawkins and 22 steerage. The theoretical examination of acting commissioned officers for the West Coast took place at Mrs Hughes’ hotel, Westport, on Wednesday, Capt. Carr presiding. Those examined were Capt. Lindop, Lieut. Clegg and Brown (Denniston), and Capt. Austin and Lieut, Pfeifer (Eeefton). The Brunner officers and other acting commissioned officers at Eeefton w r ere unable to (attend. The practical examination will be held by Major Owen next month. The Lyttelton Borough Council has decided to at once proceed with the erection of public abittoirs. The plans for the buildings have been approved by the Government. The annual meeting of the Buller Licensing Committee has been postponed until the 18th inst, in order to allow the Magistrate to be present. This has been done at the instance of the Eeefton memhere in order to make sure of a quorum being present, as although they have on two occasions journeyed to Westport the members representing that district failed to put in an appearance, consequently the meeting had to be adjourned.
