STIRRING INCIDENT IN THE RED SEA.
A sensational occurrence marked the passage through the Red Sea of the French mail steamer Polynesian, which arrived at Melbourne a few days ago. One of the crow, a native of New Caledonia, fell overboard during the night, and was swimming about for upwards of an hour before a boat’s crew sent to his rescue could ascertain his whereabouts and pick him up. The Polynesian was, of course, stopped in the meantime. The man was naturally considerably fatigued after his long struggle to keep afloat, but he was regarded as having been very lucky in not being taken by sharks, which are very numerous in the Red Sea.
