(OUR PARLIAMENTARY BEPORTBE.)
Wellington, This Day. Dissatisfaction was expressed by members on both sides of the House with the extravagance displayed in connection with the framing of the Estimates, and particularly in regard to the all-round increase of salaries of the heads of departments. It is stated, according to lobby rumour, to be further emphasised this afternoon, when Meredith will move that Government be instructed to take back that part of their Estimates with a view to recasting same in the direction of showing a reduction of £50,000 in the services for 1901-2,
A sad fatality occurred at a stone quarry at Burnside (South Australia) a few days ago, resulting in the death of William Bartholomew, aged 50, and his son Frederick, just over 20 years of age. They were engaged in blasting, and had inserted a charge of powder in the rock, but while they were in the act of tamping it with an iron rod it exploded with terrific force. The son was killed instantly, and his father was so much injured that he died a few hours later.
Two distinct shocks of earthquake were felt in Westport on Wednesday .
