THE TIMBER TRADE.

The Union Company's s.s. Koonya, which left for Newcastle recently, has initiated a new* branch of trade which the company intend to take up. For many months a considerable portion of cargo taken by most of the vessels of the Union line which left Newcastle for New Zealand was hardwood timber. The bulk of the transport of that commodity from the Australian shores has, however, been done by sailing vessels, and it is probably due to the scarcity of tonnage of that class that the Union Company have been approached and asked to go further afield for timber loading. The Koonya will, on her arrival at Newcastle, first proceed to Clarencetown, on the William River, for a consignment, and then to Port Stephens, where she will complete a cargo of about 900 tons. The timber is for the New Zealand Government, tbe requirements of which, it is said, arc very large.
