Greymouth Evening Star, AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1901. ANARCHISTS.
One of the more pleasing telegrams wo have received for some time past, will be found in another column. The message may be accepted as the platform of the Irish Party in the House of Commons. It is a complete disavowal by Messrs Davitt and Dillon of the murderous proposals of O' Donovan Rossa, and as these two gentlemen are foremost—if not the actual loaders—their disavowal is important, Mr. Dillon denies that his colleague, Davitt, spoke on the same platform at Chicago with Rossa, when the latter—anarchist like—put forth a policy of firing the principal cities in England in order, as ho affirmed, to strike terror into the British Government. He along with Mr. Davitt were further emphatic in declaring that the party to which they belonged “ would not fight England i with the weapons of anarchy,” There a is pleasing and cheerful ring about the pronouncement, that will gain them many friends. Reforms in many of the laws of the United Kingdom are desirable, and so long as these reforms are sought to be obtained in a legitimate matter, no reasonable exception can bo taken oven by those
who are opposed to such alterations. We may not agree with all that is asked _ by a party, but so long as the agitation and argument are conducted in a proper manner, we have a right to listen, and weigh the evidence advanced. Upon such lines it is possible for the veriest Tory and the most advanced Socalist to agree to differ and yet be the best of friends ; both equally patriotic ; both anxious for the welfare of their country, though seeing that welfare from different standpoints ; yet both equally conscientious and sincere.
