LARGEST DOCKS IN EUROPE
Docks arc being constructed in Heyst, on the coast of Belgium, which will be the largest in Europe, the object of the Belgium Government being to make this an important port of call for the German Lloyd and other Transatlantic companies, who obtain most of their passenger and cargo freight from the Continent. Heyst has many advantages over Brepoen or Hamburg for the traveller, especially if he comes from Central Europe, for it will mean the shortening of his journey to New York by nearly a day. So far as commerce is concerned it will involve, of course, the development of Bruges. The docks will not be finished for another two or three years, but the improvement as it effects the trade with Antwerp is already receiving the consideration of British shipowners. The largest tonnage to Antwerp goes from Parkeston, the Great Eastern Kailway’s port, near Harwich, and the distance is 140 nautical miles, whereas Heyst is only 85 nautical miles away from Parkeston,
