LORD KITCHINER’S SUCCESSOR.

Lieut.-General the Hon. Neville Gerald Lyttloton’s last active service was while ho was in command of the 4th Brigade of the First Army Corps in Natal during the present war. Some time ago ho returned to England and was promoted to the rank of Lieut.-General. A few days since the cablegrams announced that ho was to leave England, with Lord Milner for South Africa, General Lyttleton, who is the third son of the fourth Baron Lyttleton, is fiftysix years of age, and is married. Ho enBrigade in 1860, and served

with it in Canada, India, aud at Home. He was A.D.C. to Lord Spencer, Yiceroy of Ireland from 1868 to 1873, Military Secretary to Sir John Adye, Governor of Gibraltar, from 1883 to 1895, and also to Lord Reay, Governor of Bombay, during the five succeeding years. In 1892 bo was gaze:ted Lieut Colonel, aud from then till 1895 commanded the Second Battalion at Dublin. He served in the Jowaki Expedition of 1877 (medal and clasp); in the Egyptian campaign of 1882, including the battle of Telel-Kebir (mentioned in despatches, brevet of Licut.-Colonel, medal and clasp, bronze star, and the 4.h class Osmanieh.) He was also in the Nile Expedition of 1898, in command of a brigade, and was present at the battle of Khartoum, being again mentioned in despatches, and promoted to the rank of MajorGeneral. In 1885 General Lyttelton was appointed Assistant Adjutant-General to the War Office, and ho was also Assis-tant-Military Secretary in 1897-98. Immediately prior to leaving for South Africa ho was in command of the 2nd Infantry Brigade at Aldershot.
